Three months after being elected as president of the FIA, former Ferrari man Jean Todt has started to replace key personal within the Formula 1 governing body by firing former convener of the stewards and FIA liaison Alan Donnelly as well as former technical consultant Tony Purnell from their roles in F1. According to prominent F1 journalist Jame Allen, Todt will further reshuffle the FIA structure by introducing a new position. This new appointment will be called ‘F1 commissioner’, a new and powerful position set to be the face and point of contact between the teams and the governing body at and during F1 events as well as an important touch point between the teams and FOM.

At a time when F1 is searching for the spark that will bring the sport back into the limelight; the fans are used to hearing off the wall ideas that may or may not improve the sport. In fact, Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that a meeting will take place February 1 in Valencia to discuss a new points system and possible pit-stop rule changes that could take effect immediately with the start of the 2010 F1 world championship. This time however, Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone may have taken the idea of improving the sport into the stratosphere.

January 5th marks the day that Flavio’s appeal to his F1 banishment has come to an end. The verdict saw the Courts overturning the previous decision that was handed down to the colorful Italian billionaire originally. This action against the FIA was brought forward after he was banned from actively continuing his career and involvement in Formula One after being found guilty of race-fixing.

The idea of a street race in Rome the Eternal City, has been bouncing around for some time now. It appears that Rome has now secured the rights to stage an F1 race. Bernie Ecclestone has agreed to terms that would see a possible race around the historic streets of the Italian capital.

On the 30Th of January in Valencia, Spain the F1 fan-base is set to witness something entirely new to F1, a common all team official car launch. Spanish media report that the event will likely take place at the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias (City of the Arts and Sciences) complex in Valencia on January 30, 2010. The idea was backed by most teams after discussion during the last day of the Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco. Comments from new 2010 F1 entrants Lotus however, are adding fuel to the speculation that some teams may not be ready.

Reports, little different than those being circulated earlier about ex-Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen going to Mercedes are now being printed regarding 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher. Michael’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm and his doctor Johannes Piel refused to make any comments on the matter. However, the German press particularly Buld, Express and Focus are publishing reports of a near done deal with Mercedes GP.

Using Ferrari F1 engines to power their car in 2010, Swiss based Sauber were informed via an official letter from the FIA, that “their application for an entry in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championshiop has been successful” The vacancy became available after the Toyota team departed from F1 after having signed the concorde agreement binding them to compete in F1 until 2012. Effectively breaching this agreement left legal uncertainty and formalities that needed to be cleared before Sauber could have a full confirmation on their place.

Formula 1 governing body on Monday, published their usual end of the year, official grid for the following year listing GP entrants. Reading it however, leaves no fewer questions than were present before it was published. One might wonder, WHY was it published? Perhaps there’s pressure on the FIA to show just where and how, the financial chits that keep the F1 world turning are going to be generated. Despite publishing the grid, readers where a bit surprised.
